Samhain (pronounced Sow-En) is our most important Sabbat or Sacred Day, and it is our New Year. It is day we honour our ancestors and our beloved dead. This time of year, the veil between the living and the dead is considered to be thin, so it is easier to connect.During the Samhain ritual we name our beloved dead, remember them, honour our ancestors and lineage, and create altars with pictures and tokens. We share special food and make a plate of food for our deceased loved ones at the table, which is not eaten by anyone.
Foods often prepared are pumpkin, and root vegetables. After pumpkin, you can consume beets, turnips, apples, wheat, walnuts, gingerbread, cider, apple juice, spicy red wines. Meat is essential unless you are a vegetarian and the meat is replaced usually by mushrooms and potatoes.
