Samhain is a time of stepping into the deepening darkness. It is the last harvest or Deireadh Fómhair, where we gather in the last of the crops, and prepare to sustain ourselves through the Winter months. It was always a time for community to come together to gather the harvest, to remember those they had lost and to celebrate together. It is often a time of fear and apprehension facing into a time of darkening days and hoping that the resources we have gathered will see us through. It is also nature's reminder to us of the cycles of the seasons, of the vital importance of the resting or wintering to ensure our continued growth. Often the still slow times are neglected or forgotten as life speeds up and we move from deadline to deadline. Often sitting by the fire and sharing time and stories is seen as a novelty or luxury instead of something that is nourishing and valuable. It is a time of gestation, or dreamtime where we can retreat from the activity of the outer world and slow down and rest and come to know ourselves and our motivations. It is a time to give ourselves permission to dream and imagine. It is also a time where we remember our dead, those who have touched our hearts and are no longer with us in our everyday lives. It is a time when the veils between this world and the next are thin, so we remember, reach out and call them close.
We will gather on Lehaunstown Lane at the low wall at 20.45. We will set off on a candlelit remembrance walk towards the Dolmen at 9pm and commence our Ceremony.
Following the ceremony there will be time for feasting and songs and stories, so please bring something along for potluck/picnic to share. All creative offerings welcome.
If you would like to bring some wood from your hearth to add to our Samhain fire please do.
You may like to bring along a memento or photograph of passed loved ones to carry them with you on the night.
This is an outdoor event, so be mindful of dressing appropriately, wellies are advised for crossing the river to the Dolmen.
We will have a Norwegian film crew with us documenting our ceremony on the night.
