Join tenor man Sam Miles and the house trio for an evening celebrating the life and music of “Saxophone Colossus” Sonny Rollins.
Rollins, who sadly died earlier this year, enjoyed a 70 year-long career and is widely recognised as one of the most important and influential musicians in jazz. Featuring among the 60 albums he recorded as band leader, there’s a wealth of much-loved compositions such as Oleo, Tenor Madness, Doxy, Strode Rode, Pent-Up House and Sonnymoon For Two that have established themselves as standards with the generations of players who’ve performed and recorded them. Over the course of the evening Sam will be guiding us through his selections from Rollins’ considerable back-catalogue.
Cambridgeshire-based Sam Miles is a graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Music and works as a performer, arranger and educator in the region and beyond, and whose superb arrangements and consumate tenor-playing ability have prompted us to invite him to perform at our club on multiple occasions.
