Salem County Cross-Municipal Advocates is our quarterly public meeting. Come get informed, ask questions, meet government and community stakeholders, network, and share your own initiatives. This session was first planned as an informal chance for residents to meet both Republican and Democratic Salem County commissioner candidates and speak with them directly. Democrat candidates Charlie Hassler and John “Buddy” Ayars accepted the invitation. Republican candidates Ed Ramsay and Paul Collier replied, “Respectfully, no thank you.”
We still have a strong agenda. Right after the speakers, stay to mingle, connect with people in the room, and be part of the broader community.
All are welcome. Bring your questions.
1. Charles Hassler: Salem County Commissioner Candidate
15 minutes
County priorities for municipalities: cut waste and stabilize taxes; fix county roads and infrastructure; improve emergency services; and run a more accountable county government. Brief remarks, then questions.
2. John “Buddy” Ayars: Salem County Commissioner Candidate
15 minutes
Small-business support, smarter growth that does not overwhelm towns, and attracting and retaining young people in Salem County. Brief remarks, then questions.
3. Jennifer Kugler: South Jersey Preservation
15 minutes
Update on the South Jersey Cattlemen’s Cooperative: a farmer-driven effort to raise the standard of South Jersey beef through producer education, regional quality standards, local processing, and better distribution and marketing. Launch event was held on October 8th. Brief remarks, then questions.
4. Jennifer Thomas: Community Benefits Negotiation Framework
15 minutes
How Salem County municipalities and the County can negotiate community benefits with developers without giving up home rule. Building priority lists before applications are filed; screening and scoring proposed benefits; layering projects across towns so improvements reinforce each other; and a voluntary, non-binding beta test of the framework. Brief remarks, then questions.
