21st century." - IndieWire
Sandi DuBowski’s epic documentary Sabbath Queen—shot over the span of twenty-one years—follows Amichai Lau-Lavie, an Israeli descended from an unbroken line of thirty-eight rabbis stretching back a thousand years. SabbathQueen is witness to Lau-Lavie’s unfailing courage and grace, as he grapples with key questions of who we are and who we will be. Stimulating and moving, DuBowski’s film ends with Lau-Lavie’s words on Israel and Palestine post-October 7th as he evokes the challenge of our lifetime: “How do we reimagine our sacred traditions to achieve peace?”
The film has won 14 awards in US, UK, Poland, Norway, Switzerland and Germany - Zurich Film Festival Jury Special Mention, The Hamptons Film Festival Queer Sherzum Award, Woodstock Film Festival Story of Ha Change Maker Award, Ashland Film Festival Queer Award, Salem Film Festival Cultura Cuts Editing Award, Oslo Fusion Film Festival Best Documentary, Boston Jewish Film Festival Audience Award, UK Jewish Film Best Documentary, Warsaw Jewish Film Festival Best Documentary, The Polin Museum Gran Prix, Perlen Queer Film Festival Hannover Best Documentary, Florida Film Critics Best Documentary, Freiburg Gay Film Week, and SIMA Awards Special Mention.
