Tonight we celebrate the life and legacy of the great Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Ryuichi Sakamoto's async is a gorgeous album of harmony and dissonance, becoming a modern classic and one of his deepest listening experiences. The 5.1 surround sound mix of async was upmixed by Sakamoto’s friend, collaborator, and Envelop co-founder, Christopher Willits for our 32-speaker venue, allowing us to listen together within a sphere of sound.
Ryuichi Sakamoto lived many musical lives in his 71 years of pioneering work. As a member of Haruomi Hosono’s , he helped set the stage for synthpop. His solo experiments in fusing global genres and close studies of classical impressionism led to him scoring over 30 films in as many years, including Nagisa Oshima’s Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor and The Sheltering Sky, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant, and most recently Andrew Levitas’ Minamata. In the past 20 years alone, he’s written a multimedia opera, turned into an instrument, and travelled to the Arctic to . That exploratory spirit runs through Sakamoto’s 2017 album, async, which paints an audio portrait of the passing of time informed by his recovery from throat cancer. “Music, work, and life all have a beginning and an ending,” said Sakamoto in early 2019. “What I want to make now is music freed from the constraints of time.” In 2021, Sakamoto and longtime collaborator Shiro Takatani presented a new opera, TIME, which premiered at the Holland Festival. - You can find us easily. Envelop SF is within The Midway at 900 Marin St, SF, CA. Enter from the Michigan St side of the building through the patio.
- A cash bar for wine, beer, and tea is available. No outside drinks are allowed.
- No admittance into Envelop SF beyond 15 mins after start time. The main gate will be closed. Arriving late disrupts the listening. Please arrive before the event begins.
- Please avoid in's and out's during listening events to respect everyone's experience.
- Listening events are seated, dance parties are not. This event's seating map is below the description. We have a comfortable space waiting for you.
- Please no phones while listening, and please silence your ringer. We encourage you to take photos before and after the event.
- Please also be respectful of other people's experiences in the space during the event.
- All sales are final. There are no refunds or ticket exchanges.
