Developed from Kristin McIver (2015 RU Alum)’s ongoing Impressions series, this collaborative workshop explores how our perception of the world is shaped by technology and by the physical and ideological standpoints from which we encounter it. Participants encircle and collectively photograph a tree, hill or building on Governors Island, with each image recording a truthful but incomplete view. Sequenced into a looping 360-degree film, the photographs construct an apparent whole while revealing it as a technologically assembled reality composed of partial and differing views.
All necessary materials and photographic equipment will be provided. Participants may use their own smartphones if they wish, but this is not required.
This initiative is part of a series of 20 workshops designed to provide post residency support to RU’s local alumni artists. Curated by alum curator , the workshops are centered on the theme of creative engagement with the natural environment, inviting participants to explore processes of reuse, observation, material experimentation, and collective making.
About
Kristin McIver is an Australian artist based in New York. Her conceptual practice spans sculpture, painting, sound, video and installation, using language, light, data, algorithms and physical materials to examine how technology mediates perception and reshapes our understanding of reality.Her work explores the increasingly fragmented ways we encounter the world through digital systems. Moving between physical and mediated experience, McIver considers how algorithms, social media and networked technologies produce partial and divergent views of the same reality, and how technological frameworks influence what we see, what we believe, and how shared understandings are constructed.
Earlier bodies of work focused on identity and self-representation within digital consumer culture. More recent work extends these questions into the natural world, exploring the tension between material experience and its technological representation.McIver completed a master of fine arts in visual arts at the University of Melbourne, Victorian College of the Arts, in 2014. Her work is held in collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, La Trobe University Museum of Art and the Friebe Collection, as well as private collections internationally. She was awarded the Melbourne Sculpture Prize in 2012 and has participated in the Vancouver Biennale residency program and Art Omi residency.
McIver is represented by Jane Lombard Gallery in New York, Royale Projects Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and Liverpool Street Gallery in Sydney.
