In the neon-lit world of Verona Beach, the bitter feud between the Montagues and Capulets erupts in spectacular fashion. Amid the violence, Romeo Montague (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet Capulet (Claire Danes) fall deeply and dangerously in love, setting in motion one of literature's most enduring tragedies.
Retaining Shakespeare's original language while transplanting the action into a contemporary urban landscape of gang rivalries, television news and religious iconography. Featuring cinematography by Australian Don McAlpine, it became one of the defining films of the 1990s. Its bold visual style driven by Jill Bilcock’s frenetic editing, standout performances and an iconic soundtrack featuring music by Garbage and The Cardigans, introduced Shakespeare to a new generation.
