October 2026 Saginaw River Marine Historical Society presentation...FREE Program: Roger LeLievre, Nathan Leindecker, and Matt Miner with "FROM TRASH TO TREASURE: Salvaging and Saving Collections"

Roger LeLievre, president of the Marine Historical Society of Detroit, will talk about the MHSD’s ongoing program to digitize historic images from donated / shared collections. He will be joined by MHSD board members Nathan Leindecker and Matt Miner, who will talk about the equipment they use, how the images are archived, how they are being shared on line and show some of the thousands of amazing images already scanned.
Among those making their images available to MHSD include Dick Wicklund, Capt. Thomas Basore, Jim Hoffman, Robert Zeleznik, Jim and Hal Jackson, Skip Meier and of course the collection of Peter B. Worden, which really was the start of the process. MHSD was also able to purchase the historically-significant Peter Vander Linden collection last year.
There is a story behind all of these collections, and yes, we really did rescue a priceless historic collection from a Dumpster!
The presentation will be at Trinity Episcopal Church, 815 N. Grant St. near downtown Bay City. Parking is in the back of the church on Fifth Street.
Know Your Ships books and the 2026 edition of the Know Your Ships EXTRA, as well as the MHSD’s recent, state history award-winning book Ahoy & Farewell III will also be on sale.
Roger LeLievre has been editor and publisher of the annual “Know Your Ships” book since 1995 but has been involved in its publication much longer than that – he was 14 when his first boat picture was published in the 1968 edition. He has been president of the Marine Historical Society of Detroit for over 20 years, he is editor of its monthly publication “The Historian” and was recipient of the group’s Historian of the Year Award in 2006. He is also involved with the non-profit Web site BoatNerd.com as editor of the daily news page. In addition, he is an associate member of the International Shipmasters’ Association (Port Huron Lodge #2) and is on the Soo Locks Visitor Center Association board of directors.

The Saginaw River Marine Historical Society (SRMHS) is an all volunteer organization interested in the maritime history of the Saginaw River and its connecting waters. We have seven monthly presentations a year and they start at 6:30 pm on the third Saturday of each month USUALLY at Trinity Episcopal Church, 815 N. Grant St. (and Center Ave.), Bay City, Michigan (unless there is a different location / day / time for a specific presentation). Customarily, there are no presentations in May, June, July, August, and December.
