A young teenage girl struggles to take care of herself and her younger brother after being abandoned by their single mother. Shot naturalistically this earthy, bittersweet coming-of-age tale is heart-breaking and life-affirming in equal measure. 'Rocks', a Nigerian British girl may not be academic, but she’s a whizz with a make-up brush. When her troubled mum leaves her and her younger brother to fend for themselves, they become fugitives from grown-up authority, hiding their homeless status at school. With glorious central performances by Bukky Bakray and D’Angelou Osei Kissiedu, this is joyful, energetic, but at the same time piercingly sad and moving. For fans of Ken Loach’s Ken or Céline Sciamma’s Bande Des Filles.
