We are delighted to welcome author Rob Heber, who along with his co-author Sean Hagerty, created the delightful character of Ben the Pen, the narrator of their children's book Founder's Font, to Blue Apple Books on Tuesday, November 10 from 4:30-6 PM. ABOUT THE BOOK
Founders' Font is a full-color educational journey through American history, cursive handwriting, and the founding documents that shaped our nation. Created for children, parents, grandparents, and educators, it introduces young readers to the words, ideas, and principles that helped define the United States while encouraging handwriting, discussion, curiosity, and independent thought.
Before the alphabet became a collection of keystrokes on a screen, children learned to form letters carefully by hand, one thought at a time. Founders' Font brings that connection between thought and writing back to life.
Through engaging illustrations, historical quotations, and the guidance of Ben the Pen, children explore ideas such as liberty, responsibility, self-government, citizenship, and individual rights. Along the way, they encounter the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the words of the Founding Fathers while developing an appreciation for the cursive handwriting in which many of these ideas were originally recorded.
But Founders' Font is about more than learning cursive. It encourages children to slow down, ask questions, think critically, and explore what these historic words mean. Every carefully formed letter becomes an exercise in patience and attention. Every discussion becomes an opportunity to connect the past with the world they are growing up in today. The goal is not simply perfect penmanship, but engagement with history and the responsibility of thinking for oneself.
