Unlocking the Fretboard with the CAGED System

The CAGED system is one of the guitar’s most powerful concepts—but also one of its most misunderstood. Many guitarists memorize its five shapes without understanding how they connect, leaving the fretboard feeling just as confusing as before.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to use CAGED as a navigation system rather than simply as a collection of chord shapes. The class will explore how the five patterns connect across the fretboard, how to locate chords and arpeggios in any key, and how the system provides a foundation for scales, improvisation, and greater musical freedom.
This workshop is appropriate for guitarists who are new to the CAGED system and those who have studied it but struggled to apply it. Participants will leave with a clearer mental map of the fretboard and practical exercises they can immediately incorporate into their playing.
About the Instructor:
Guillaume “Will” Metz is a guitarist, educator, and founder of the Will Metz Guitar Academy. A former college music instructor and active performer, Will helps guitarists move beyond memorized patterns and develop a genuine understanding of the fretboard.
His practical teaching approach focuses on the relationships among notes, intervals, chords, scales, and harmony. Will is also the author of several guitar-education resources and regularly leads workshops, masterclasses, and immersive retreats.
