Join Groundwork East and other like minded volunteers to learn more about your local river and how volunteer work can make a huge difference to the natural environment.
What:
We will be adding 'berms' to the river, woody structures that create bends in the river. These help recreate the natural shape of Chalk Streams like the Colne, where they have been artificially straightened in the past.
This creates and extends habitats used by spawning fish and invertebrates, and the berms themselves trap silt which then allows native plants to grow.
We will be planning the following work, with some 'spare' days in case weather is not favourable.
The spare days (2nd and 9th Dec) will be used to continue berm work or move to the next site if we finish in Oxhey Park.
- Adding woody material to the existing berms, putting in more stakes on upstream berms: 23rd Sept, 14th Oct
- Adding in deflectors on right bank: 21st Oct, 28th Oct
- New berms - adding in new woody material : 4th and 11th Oct
- Add in new berm downstream: 18th and 25th Nov
- Spare days: 2 and 9th Dec
When: Wednesday 23rd September, Wednesday 14th October then every Wednesday until 9th December.
