Riddim Riders: A Deep Dive into Creative Flow with DJ SLD
From Selector to Creator
You might know me from my work with Melbourne Underground Beat Collective, but Riddim Riders is a purely solo, passion-fueled project born from a desire to challenge myself creatively as a DJ. I was "over" just playing one track after another, matching beats for an hour. My desire isn't to be a human jukebox, but to be a Selector—to curate a unique, evolving sound and to create more interesting, dynamic soundscapes.
For Riddim Riders, my focus isn't on a flat-out, banging 125 BPM mix. Instead, I’m creating a selector's set where I intentionally blend different tracks together, constantly mixing up genres and tempos for a more nuanced experience.
The Magic of STEMS & the Live Remix
The core of this set revolves around my use of STEMS. For those unfamiliar, STEMS are individual component tracks from a song—think about isolating the bassline from one track, the vocals from another, and the beats from a third.
This is where the magic happens. It allows for true recontextualization in real-time. My philosophy is all about bridging the gap between sound system weight and warmth. I might take a classic, culturally massive vocal—one that people's brains instantly auto-complete—and place it over a completely unexpected, heavy, syncopated foundation. Suddenly, you're not just hearing a familiar hook; you're hearing it in a brand new context, bringing heavy, subterranean low-end to human, emotional warmth.
Beyond the Pounding 4x4
This is the philosophy I call Over 4x4. 🇨🇦⚡️
Why stick to a rigid, pounding four-on-the-floor beat when you can let the rhythm swing? By taking control, I can layer soaring, soulful house vocals over syncopated 2-step garage and broken beats, creating room to breathe. This gives the low-end space to roll and gives the room true freedom to move.
Expect to hear everything from a slower, deep dub or reggae edit backed with a 2-step soulful vocal, to high-energy (but still slow) tracks.
Riddim Riders is for those who are over the "gym movement." We provide the deep, physical bass. No boxing you in. Come experience the true freedom of creative dance and movement.
