About this Event

The UChicago Buddhist Association is pleased to present a talk on Revitalizing Buddhism in India by Wangmo Dixey, Executive Director of the Light of Buddhadharma Foundation International, President of the International Buddhist Association of America, and Director of Dharma College in Berkley, CA, and Dr. Richard Dixey, academic, scientist, Dean of Dharma College, advisor for Khyentse Foundation, and a lifelong student Buddhism.


Drawing from recent journeys through Bodhgaya, Sarnath, Rajgir, Vaishali, Diamond Triangle and other sacred sites, this talk explores the growing international movement of pilgrims, monks, scholars, and cultural organizations returning to the land of the Buddha. It will examine how India’s Buddhist heritage is being rediscovered through pilgrimage, chanting ceremonies, cultural preservation, new educational initiatives, and renewed global interest in Buddhist culture and practice.





Speaker Bios:
Wangmo Dixey

Wangmo Dixey, born in Berkeley, California in 1969, is the eldest daughter of the respected Venerable Tarthang Tulku. A dedicated leader in the Buddhist community, Wangmo serves as the Director of the College and holds key roles, including Executive Director of the Light of Buddhadharma Foundation International and President of the International Buddhist Association of America.

With a BA in International Relations from UCLA and an MA in International Development from American University, Wangmo’s academic background is as impressive as her leadership. In 2023, she was honored with an honorary Ph.D. from Mahachulalongkorn Rajavidyalaya University in Bangkok, recognizing her lifelong commitment to preserving the Buddha Sasana and her efforts to promote Buddhist teachings globally.

Among her many accomplishments, Wangmo made history by organizing the first-ever Vesak celebration at the White House, marking a significant moment for Buddhism in America. She is married to Dr. Richard Dixey, and together they have two children. Wangmo’s tireless work in bringing Buddhist communities together has earned her numerous international awards, reflecting her unwavering dedication to the Buddha Sasana and the welfare of all beings.



Dr. Richard Dixey

Richard Dixey holds a Ph.D. from London University, an M.A. with distinction in the history and philosophy of science from London University, and a B.A. Hons from Oxford. He was director of the Bioelectronic Research Unit at St Bartholomew’s hospital in London for fourteen years before founding and becoming the Chief Executive of Phytopharm PLC, a biotechnology company listed on the London Stock Exchange. Richard has been a student of Buddhism since 1972 and has traveled extensively in the Himalayas, India and South East Asia. He is currently an advisor to the Khyentse Foundation.
