This course is designed to equip mental health professionals with a deeper understanding of how trauma, adverse experiences, and family-system dynamics directly influence the development and maintenance of substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors.

Participants will examine how trauma responses manifest in clinical presentation, how maladaptive coping strategies become entrenched through addiction, and how unprocessed traumatic experiences shape treatment resistance, motivation, and relapse vulnerability.

Through an exploration of both theory and applied practice, clinicians will learn how to:

  • Identify trauma-related behaviors and survival responses commonly seen in individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Understand the neurobiological and developmental links between trauma, emotional regulation, and addiction.
  • Recognize how family roles, boundaries, and intergenerational trauma patterns reinforce addictive cycles.
  • Integrate trauma-informed interventions into assessment, treatment planning, and family work.
  • Strengthen therapeutic alliances through safety-building, attunement, co-regulation, and structured relational repair.

By connecting the “why” behind client behaviors with actionable, trauma-informed clinical strategies, this training empowers clinicians to more effectively support individuals and families on their path to healing and lasting recovery.

Dr. Chantelle Thomas, PhD

Executive Clinical Director, The Manor / Windrose Recovery

Dr. Chantelle Thomas is a clinical psychologist with deep expertise in addiction treatment, trauma, and health psychology. As Executive Clinical Director at The Manor, she leads the clinical team and ensures individualized, evidence-based care for residents facing substance use disorders, trauma histories, chronic pain, and co-occurring mental health challenges.

Her background includes a PhD in Clinical Psychology, as well as internship and post-doctoral fellowship training in Health and Rehabilitation Psychology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health — where she developed specialized proficiency in trauma-informed therapy, chronic pain treatment, and medical-surgical consultation.

Before joining The Manor, Dr. Thomas served as Program Director at a dual-diagnosis addiction and trauma treatment center in Malibu, California. She then helped develop a substance use disorder consultation clinic embedded within primary care at a community health center — bridging behavioral health and medical care to better serve individuals with complex needs.

Dr. Thomas is also a certified biofeedback practitioner, and under her leadership The Manor integrates holistic, body-aware therapies such as somatic experiencing, trauma-sensitive yoga, and wellness practices — recognizing the mind–body interplay in healing trauma and addiction.

Driven by a commitment to compassionate, individualized care, Dr. Thomas emphasizes creating a safe, inviting environment where clients feel seen and respected. Her clinical vision is grounded in the belief that healing involves more than treating symptoms — it requires supporting the whole person: mind, body, relationships, and life beyond treatment.
