Clayton C. Anderson, known as “Astro Clay®” and “Nebraska’s Astronaut,” will join the Trails & Rails Museum – Buffalo County Historical Society on Sunday, November 1, to help celebrate the opening of NASA’s traveling exhibit, The Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe.
Born in Omaha and raised in Ashland, Nebraska, Anderson retired from NASA in 2013 after a remarkable 30-year career, including 15 years as an engineer and 15 years as an astronaut at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He spent more than five months aboard the International Space Station in 2007 and flew aboard Space Shuttle missions STS-117/120 and STS-131 in 2007 and 2010. During his career, Anderson accumulated 167 days in space and completed six spacewalks totaling nearly 40 hours.
Beyond his achievements in space, Anderson is an accomplished author, motivational speaker, and space education advocate. He has written five books, including two nonfiction titles and three children’s books, inspiring readers of all ages to explore the possibilities of space and pursue their dreams.
Anderson will participate in a members-only meet-and-greet from 1–2 p.m., followed by a keynote address open to the general public from 2–3 p.m. A book signing will follow the presentation in partnership with Sequel Bookshop of Kearney. The Hubble exhibit will open to the public following Anderson’s address.
The event offers visitors a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from a Nebraska-born astronaut whose story of perseverance, discovery, and exploration embodies the spirit of scientific achievement.
The free exhibit invites visitors of all ages to explore the science, technology, history, and discoveries behind one of humanity’s most important tools for observing the universe.
This presentation is made possible in part by Humanities Nebraska and other generous supporters.
