About this Event
Resonant Bodies is an exhibition that focuses on the oft-overlooked and undervalued social art, a medium closely entwined with notions of care, community and tender labour. The exhibition features five socially-engaged artists, whose practices map the body as a site of vulnerability, politics and collective meaning-making. Spanning video, installation, performative, somatic and participatory structures, Resonant Bodies investigates how personal, private experiences – of grief, care, visibility, shame, intimacy, memory, love and passion – resonate outward into the interconnected web of social space.
While the body has been largely treated as a representational subject in the canon of art history, the works in Resonant Bodies engage with embodiment as a product of cultural, institutional, linguistic and bureaucratic systems, which shape how various bodies are moulded, silenced, and regulated. Through unconventional formats, such as vocalisation, breaking bread, practising care, artistic activism, moving together as a collective body, and bringing the invisible into the spotlight, the artists propose alternative modes of engagement that resist the commercial, hyper-saturated spectacle of the postmodern age and instead, invite healing, bonding, witnessing and presence.
Above all, Resonant Bodies centres around the notion of community – as a non-profit exhibition, workshops are free and inclusive, allowing for the expression of marginalised and under-represented voices and bodies. Resonant Bodies actively takes a step in the process of weaving social bonds beyond binaries and strengthening community ties. Art thus transcends its medium to become a social form, pushing viewers to question what it means to truly stand with each other in moments of rawness and fragility, and how resonance might bloom through these participatory acts, sensed not only between bodies, but from within them.
