About this Event

With rising housing and energy costs and increasingly frequent extreme weather events, resilient design has never mattered more for affordable housing. Join Scott Edwards Architecture for a case study and panel discussion on Sabin CDC's Nicole Sandoval Building — a 78-unit affordable multifamily project in Portland's Alberta neighborhood built to reduce resident utility burden and keep the community functioning through disruptions.

The project pursued ETO’s Path to Net-Zero Energy through a high-performance envelope, triple-paned windows, a ground-source heat pump system, domestic hot water heat pump system, and a 114 kW on-site PV array. Beyond energy performance, the stakeholders and AE team prioritized a resilient first floor — including upgraded structural systems, battery storage, a microgrid controller system, and dedicated operations and community space that can support residents and staff during outages or emergencies. The result: a more durable, adaptable building that costs less to operate and keeps residents safer and housed during hazards — a model for how resilience can be integrated into affordable housing.

This presentation and panel will dive into the resilient design process, strategies, and personal experiences of the owner and AE team that makes this project a leading example of resilient multifamily housing.
