Reptile Survey and Heathland Species Guided Walk

Join us for a rare chance to step behind the scenes at RSPB Arne on a guided walk that combines a live reptile survey with an exploration of our special heathland wildlife.
This exclusive experience takes you into an area of the reserve not normally open to the public, where our expert guides will introduce you to both the secretive reptiles and the specialist heathland species that make Arne so important. During the reptile survey, you’ll observe licensed surveyors as they search for all six of the UK’s native reptile species—including the elusive Smooth Snake and the iconic Sand Lizard. You’ll learn how and why these surveys are carried out, what makes Arne such a stronghold for these rare species, and how we protect them.
As we continue across the heath, we’ll also look for a range of heathland specialists that thrive in this precious habitat—such as Dartford warblers flitting through gorse, curious invertebrates adapted to sandy soils, and the wonderfully varied plants that shape this unique landscape. Our guides will share insights into the ecology, conservation challenges, and remarkable adaptations of these heathland inhabitants.
This walk offers an exclusive opportunity to deepen your understanding of one of the UK’s rarest habitats, meet its most charismatic residents, and see conservation in action.
Older children only – please contact us before booking: [email protected]
Important Information
All reptile surveys are carried out under licence, following strict guidelines to ensure minimal disturbance. Commercial photography is not permitted. Personal photographs may be allowed at appropriate moments, provided this causes no additional disturbance.
Wildlife can be unpredictable, so while we’ll do our best, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
