The Camrose Booster and the Bailey Theatre are proud to present the ninth in our Double Feature Remembrance Day series . . .
“Behind the Glory” and “Captains of the Clouds”
Friday, November 6th - FREE ADMISSION
This year, our subject is the British Commonwealth Air Training Program, one of the first and most important contributions Canada would make to the war effort. Under a deal signed in 1939, Canada agreed to provide facilities and training for airmen from every part of the Commonwealth. This was an enormous undertaking. In 1939 the RCAF had only 4,000 personnel, less than a dozen airports of its own and training facilities for only 400 ground crew per year. Now the RCAF was expected to train thousands. It had to recruit instructors, build air bases, acquire aircraft and develop training schools for different specialties. By war’s end, there were 151 training schools, and every province had BCATP installations. Canada was, in the words of U.S. President Roosevelt, “The aerodrome of democracy.”
First Feature: Ted Barris, acclaimed Canadian Historian, historical author, journalist, broadcaster, and Member of the Order, returns to Camrose with his presentation on The British Commonwealth Air Training Program. Ted’s presentation is based on interviews with more than 200 former instructors and BCATP students from around the world. In the book being featured this year, “Behind the Glory: Canada’s Role in the Allied Air War,” Ted tells the story of Canada’s largest World War Two expenditure: $1.75 billion, for a Commonwealth-wide training scheme based in Canada, that supplied the Allied air war with nearly a quarter of a million qualified airmen.
Mr. Barris will bring a supply of his book, “Behind the Glory,” which he will be happy to autograph for you or some lucky person on your Christmas list. This is a premium soft cover book, selling for just $35, all in.
For your convenience, the Spotlight Bistro is offering your choice of Veggie Wrap, Chicken Veggie Wrap, Egg Salad Croissant, Ham & Cheese Croissant, and a side of veggies and dip, a cookie, and a bottle of water for $18. Pre-purchase your lunchbox by November 4th at the Bailey Box Office or online to be sure that you have one waiting for you! Some dietary restrictions (gluten or dairy free etc.) can be accommodated. Please call the Box Office.
Second Feature: “Captains of the Clouds”

The evening will conclude with a screening of “Captains of the Clouds,” starring James Cagney. It was produced with the full cooperation of the Royal Canadian Airforce to promote enlistment in the BCATP. While the plot seems contrived and production elements amateurish by today’s standards, it should be viewed through the lens of 1941. It was the first Hollywood movie filmed entirely in Canada and Cagney’s first in Technicolor.
FREE ADMISSION has been made possible by the Camrose Booster. However, for planning purposes, you must book your free tickets in advance at www.baileytheatre.com or pick them up at the box office until the day of the event, as long as tickets last.
