Remembering Canada’s
first national internment operations
October 28th is National Internment Commemoration and Education Day, honouring the memory of those unjustly imprisoned during Canada’s first national internment operations from 1914 to 1920.
During this dark period in Canadian history, Ukrainians and other Europeans were branded “enemy aliens” and imprisoned in 24 internment camps across the country. Many others faced restrictions on freedom of speech and movement, enduring indignities and great suffering simply because of who they were.
Upon their release, some denied their Ukrainian identity, religion, and culture in order to protect their families from further discrimination. More than a century later, the pain and silence of those years still echo in our communities, reminding us of the importance of truth, justice, and remembrance.
We honour the memory of the internees by sharing their stories and educating others about this injustice in Canada’s history. May we always remain vigilant in defense of civil liberties and human rights.

In recognition of the Internment Camp that once existed in Nanaimo, there will be a Memorial Service on Sunday, November 1, beginning at 11:00 AM with the Divine Liturgy and Panakhyda at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Church, 4017 Victoria Avenue, Nanaimo.
Following the service, there will be a special program in the parish hall, offering reflections and educational insights about the internment operations, along with a screening of a short documentary film.
Members of St. Mary’s Orthodox community in Parksville will also join us for this commemoration, as we come together in unity and shared remembrance.
All are warmly invited to attend, to learn, to remember, and to pray together for peace, justice, and unity.
