Drawing on the work of Audre Lorde, Dr. Schalk examines how the language of self-care has shifted in contemporary culture and what can be recovered from its more radical political roots. The talk connects self-care to disability justice and pleasure activism, asking audiences to think beyond individualized wellness toward collective care, survival, and liberation.
This event is part of the Marca Bristo ’74 Fund initiative to raise awareness of disability on campus and is co-sponsored by the School for Global and Public Service.
Dr. Sami Schalk (she/her) is a Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She earned her BA in English (Creative Writing) and Women’s Studies from Miami University, her MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) from the University of Notre Dame, and her PhD in Gender Studies from Indiana University.
Dr. Schalk’s interdisciplinary research focuses broadly on disability, race, and gender in contemporary American literature and culture. She has published on literature, film, and material culture in a variety of peer-reviewed humanities journals.
Location: The Powerhouse, Weissberg Auditorium
