About this Event
Good on Paper Books & Stationery is honored to welcome Rebecca Blumenstein, President of NBC News, and acclaimed journalist and author Diana Kapp for a special author talk and signing of their powerful new book, The Last Free Women: A Daring Escape from Afghanistan and Coming of Age in America.
When Kabul fell to the Taliban in August 2021, four young Afghan women faced an unimaginable choice: leave behind everything they knew or risk losing their futures. The Last Free Women tells the extraordinary story of their escape and their determination to rebuild their lives in America.
Houston holds a special place in this remarkable story. On August 31, 2021, 124 Afghan refugees, including employees of The New York Times and their families, arrived in Houston after a harrowing evacuation. Our city's community organizations, volunteers, and everyday residents stepped forward to help these families find safety, stability, and a new beginning.
Through the experiences of four courageous women, Marwa, Maryam, Mursal, and Samira, Blumenstein and Kapp explore resilience, freedom, women's rights, and the profound responsibility we share to help those seeking refuge.
We invite our Houston community to join us for this especially meaningful conversation about courage, compassion, and the power of a community to change lives.
The evening will conclude with a book signing and an opportunity to meet the authors.
