Explore your own and others' arguments and perspectives as we read The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. With the rise of AI, there is a growing concern that people are losing the ability to reflect, form and effectively communicate their own opinions on matters great and small. This liberal arts mini-course is partly a reaction to this development. We will cover things that AI cannot do for you: reflect and form your own beliefs, understand your deeper priorities, and communicate your values and ideas to others. We will do this through live, constructive discussion.
Through the reading and exploration of one of the great books of literature, we will meet with historically critical thinkers and excellent communicators. This exploration will create a smooth segue into rhetorical exercises, where we practice discussing our own views on the passages.
You will learn:
How to build more convincing arguments.
How to speak convincingly for or against a position.
How to debate with critics and defend your reasoning.
Develop C1/C2 English vocabulary.
The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire
This session is based on reading excerpts from “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” by Edward Gibbon. European civilization still reverberates from the experience of the Roman empire.
Gibbon’s masterpiece documents the expansion of the empire, which was at some times welcomed and others hated; Christianity’s rise from a collection of beggars to an illegal underground society, to seeing emperors kneel before the pope, and the sunset of democracy under the power of authoritarianism. The book provides many prompts for reflecting on the kind of society we have, and the society we want (or don’t want) to live in.
