This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in architectural history, historic churches, or local heritage to get hands on experience in heritage recording.
Background
The present church building dates back to at least the 13th Century and was once the seat of the medieval Diocese of Brechin. Although altered and restored over time, it retains elements of its medieval architecture, including parts of the original nave, choir and west front, as well as modern stained glass. Standing beside the cathedral is the Round Tower, built around AD 1000 and one of only two surviving Irish-style round towers in Scotland.
This exceptional church is one of ten chosen to form a case study site as part of the project, led by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and Scotland's Churches Trust.
Working alongside Brechin Cathedral Trust we’re opening the doors to Brechin Cathedral on Friday 9th October for a focused day of heritage recording. We’re looking for volunteers who would like to help document its rich material culture and significant architecture.
What’s involved
We will be working together to create a detailed record of the building, its furnishings, fixtures, fittings, and historic artefacts, along with the church’s architecture. We use Scotland’s Churches Trust’s Rapid Church Recording Methodology, developed to document Scotland's church heritage and create lasting records of church buildings and their contents.
Using photography and a simple recording form, we will capture a snapshot of the church at a particular moment in time, recording both the building and the objects it contains. This information contributes to our research and provides churches with a valuable resource for future conservation, interpretation, fundraising, heritage management and archival purposes.
