About this Event
Contemporary jazz guitarist and composer Ray Obiedo developed his distinct technique in the San Francisco Bay Area, heavily shaped by the percussive funk of the James Brown revue alongside influences like Miles Davis, Motown, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, he built a formidable reputation touring with jazz legends like Herbie Hancock, Julian Priester, and Johnny "Hammond" Smith, while leading influential local projects such as Kick and Rhythmus 21. His extensive session work and compositions earned widespread acclaim, with his songs recorded by artists like Tower of Power and Sheila E., and featured on major film soundtracks like Internal Affairs.
Establishing himself as a standout solo artist, Obiedo released a series of acclaimed albums throughout the 1990s on the Windham Hill Jazz label, including Sticks and Stones, which reached the Top Ten on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts. Blending R&B, pop, Latin jazz, and world influences, his music continuously reflects the diverse soundscape of his Northern California roots. His album Carousel, released on Rhythmus Records, serves as a celebration of his lifelong connection to the San Francisco Bay Area's unique musical legacy.
