We are throwing out the modern dampening, bypassing the mundane, and tackling New Zealand's greatest rail challenge the way it was meant to be conquered: with raw, untamed steam power.Raurimu Thunder puts you trackside and onboard as our heavy heritage steam locomotive charges into the rugged heart of the North Island to take on the legendary Raurimu Spiral. This is a full day, high horsepower assault on a brutal mountain grade. No filters, no computer assists—just pure, unfiltered vintage engineering working at the absolute limit.

The Scenic Approach: Settle into our premium carriages at your local station as the whistle blows and the journey begins. We steam smoothly through rolling rural valleys toward the base of the Central Plateau. Indulge in fresh barista coffee, artisan snacks, or a local craft beer from the fully stocked cafe carriage as the excitement builds.
Conquering the Spiral: Feel the earth shake as our locomotive battles the 1 in 50 grade of the world famous Raurimu Spiral. This 1898 engineering masterpiece overcomes a massive 139 metre vertical rise through a brilliant layout of horseshoe curves, deep tunnels, and a complete 360 degree loop. Experience the tight, coiling geometry firsthand from the outdoor platform, where you can practically see the front of the train loop right over the back.
The Trackside Photo Runby: Step off the train directly onto the rugged track ballast for the ultimate adventure highlight. Clear your camera lenses and find your vantage point along the tracks. Feel the anticipation build as the massive steam locomotive sets back out of sight, then marvel at the raw power as it charges back up the spiral for an unforgettable, full steam display.
The Atmospheric Return: Board your assigned premium carriage at the summit for a cozy, relaxing journey home.
