About this Event
A guided 75-minute movement experience designed to take you out of performance mode and back into the felt experience of your body.
RAQS SHAKTI brings together feminine movement, somatic exploration, dance, breath, music, and ideas drawn from yogic philosophy and the chakra system.
Our first gathering begins with ROOT - the body’s relationship to ground, weight, instinct, stability and belonging.
There are no mirrors in this practice. Nothing to correct. Nothing to perform. You will not be learning choreography or trying to make your movement look a particular way.
Instead, we’ll explore what movement feels like from the inside.
We’ll begin with a short introduction to the long relationship between movement, ritual and embodied meditation, then connect our theme to the subtle-body system and the Root Chakra.
From there, we move.
We’ll warm the body, bring attention downward into the feet, legs, pelvis and connection with the floor, and gradually move from guided exercises into freer exploration.
Expect swirls and undulations. Repetition and stillness. Shaking. Stomping. Softness. Weight. Stops. Maybe even a roar.
Some movement may feel distinctly feminine. Some may feel raw. Some may feel strange. Some may barely look like dance at all.
That’s the point.
We are not asking: How does my body look when I move?
We are experimenting with a different question:
What happens when I let my body move before I decide what the movement should look like?
