The Ramay~Macatee Speaker Series, presented by the Bridge Street History Center, welcomes George Getschow for an evening exploring the life, work, and legacy of legendary Texas writer Larry McMurtry.
A Pulitzer Prize finalist, award-winning journalist, author and educator, Getschow was a longtime friend and colleague of McMurtry. During his career at The Wall Street Journal, he worked as a reporter, bureau chief, page one editor and Mexico correspondent.
But it was his friendship and literary relationship with McMurtry that gives Getschow a particularly personal perspective. As writer-in-residence at the University of North Texas, he conducted writing workshops with McMurtry inside Booked Up, his famous bookstore in Archer City.
Following McMurtry’s death in 2021, Getschow edited Pastures of the Empty Page: Fellow Writers on the Life and Legacy of Larry McMurtry, bringing together writers who knew and were influenced by McMurtry.
Getschow also helped spearhead the creation of the Larry McMurtry Literary Center in Archer City, where he now serves as executive director and continues McMurtry’s literary legacy.
Come hear the stories behind the man, the books and the Texas places that shaped McMurtry—from someone who knew him personally.
