Rally to Shut Down the Sununu CenterOver a century of abuse. Generations of children harmed. Enough is enough.
For more than 100 years, children have suffered abuse and mistreatment at New Hampshire’s Youth Development Center, now known as the Sununu Youth Services Center. The names have changed, investigations have been conducted, millions have been paid to survivors, and promises have been made to close the facility. Yet the doors remain open, and reports of abuse and mistreatment continue.
How many more children have to be harmed before enough is enough?
On Sunday, November 1st, survivors will gather once again outside the Sununu Youth Services Center to demand its permanent closure and immediate protection and appropriate services for every child currently in state care.
This rally is organized by survivors, but it is not about us. It is about the children who are still inside.
Many of us know firsthand what happens behind those walls. We know what it feels like to be a child with no voice, to have adults dismiss your cries for help, and to be labeled the problem while the people responsible for protecting you escape accountability.
We are watching patterns that harmed generations of children repeat themselves, and we refuse to remain silent.
For years, New Hampshire officials have promised to close this facility. Meanwhile, children continue to live there, and independent oversight agencies continue to raise serious concerns about their safety.
We are demanding:
* The permanent closure of the Sununu Youth Services Center.
* Immediate safety and protection for every child currently inside.
* Appropriate mental health care, trauma-informed treatment, and supportive services for children in state custody.
* Safe, appropriate alternatives for children currently housed at the facility.
* Accountability and independent oversight to ensure the abuse is never allowed to happen again.
Closing the building alone is not enough. We must ensure these children are moved into safe environments where their needs are met and their voices are heard.
We cannot undo what happened to generations of children, but we can fight to prevent it from happening to another.
This is a peaceful, survivor-organized rally. Families, former residents, advocates, and anyone who believes children deserve safety and dignity are encouraged to attend.
