THE FULCRUM
Mechanics versus Organics
The fulcrum, Latin for support or pivot point, refers to a point on which something is supported or balanced—such as the pivot point of a seesaw or lever. In contact improvisation, we like to expand this to include multi-axial tilting movements and rotation around a contact area before it transitions into rolling or sliding.
In this workshop, we will also address this three-dimensionality and multidirectionality during all movements in the contact area. In our improvisations, we will analyze and explore the extent to which this aspect actually benefits, inspires, or perhaps inhibits our freedom of movement, decision-making, and connection with our respective partners.
Can a mechanical approach to movement even have a somatic component and achieve an organic quality? And where is the clarity and specificity when all axes and directions are present at the same time? What do we orient ourselves by, and what do our partners orient themselves by, when everything is in motion?

Mechanik versus Organik
Das Fulkrum, lateinisch für Stütze oder Dreh- und Angelpunkt, bezeichnet einen Punkt, auf dem etwas gestützt wird oder sich im Gleichgewicht befindet – wie der Drehpunkt einer Wippe oder eines Hebels. In der Kontaktimprovisation erweitern wir dies gerne um die multiaxiale Kippbewegung und die Rotation um einen Kontaktbereich herum, bevor dieser ins Rollen oder Gleiten übergeht.
In diesem Workshop werden wir uns dieser Dreidimensionalität und Multidirektionalität außerdem während jeglicher Bewegungen des Kontaktbereiches zuwenden. Wir werden in unseren Improvisationen analysieren und erforschen, inwiefern dieser Aspekt uns in unserer Bewegungsfreiheit, Entscheidungsfindung und Verbindung mit unseren jeweiligen Partnerpersonen tatsächlich nützt, inspiriert oder vielleicht doch eher hemmt.
Kann ein mechanischer Zugang zur Bewegung überhaupt eine somatische Komponente in sich tragen und eine organische Qualität erlangen? Und wo bleibt die Klarheit und Spezifizität, wenn alle Achsen und Richungen zugleich präsent sind? Woran orientieren wir uns und woran orientieren sich unsere Partnerinnen und Partner, wenn alles in Bewegung ist?
