THIS CLASS INVOLVES MULTIPLE SESSIONS, LOCATIONS AND INSTRUCTIONS - please read carefully!
Discover the ancient Japanese art of raku pottery firing, where vibrant glazes and intense heat create stunning, one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Seeing your piece removed from the fiery outdoor kiln, and witnessing the unique, unpredictable results firsthand is part of the fun. Dive into the magic of raku- it’s pottery like you’ve never seen before!
3-CLASS SESSIONS + DATES
SUNDAY, September 27th - 11am-1pm - Building Session 1 BROOKLYN- join us in our Brooklyn pottery studio to hand build your own raku piece with instruction from master teacher Darren Corona. He will demonstrate what shapes work best for raku firing (and which do not).
SUNDAY, October 4th - 11am - 1pm - Building Session 2 BROOKLYN - this is your second building session for your raku piece in our Brooklyn pottery studio - it's best if you come to both sessions!
SATURDAY October 17th - 11am - 5pm - Raku firing day STATEN ISLAND -This is the fun part! Join us in Maker Park in Staten Island for hours of glazing and firing your handbuilt pieces in our outdoor kiln! There's smoke, fire and it's a very traditional and rustic process. You'll leave with your own unique, vibrant and beautiful piece(s) to take home. PLEASE NOTE: your piece may break while firing.
No pieces bigger than 12 inches tall and 6 inches wide, and nothing smaller than a baseball. Darren will go over designs that work best for raku firing. You may make up to 2 pieces. If you'd like to make more, it'll be $20 for each additional piece. Your piece may break during firing - it's an exciting and unpredictable part of the process.
Kiddos 12 and up are welcome as long as they sign up with an adult.

REFUND POLICY:
If we cancel, we will refund you in full and notify you. You may cancel and get a full refund up to seven days before the class. After that, refunds are contingent on us being able to fill your seat. Under no circumstances do we offer refunds to individuals who cancel on the same day. Please note that if you cancel, Eventbrite fees are non-refundable.
INSTRUCTOR:
Darren Corona is a ceramic artist with more than 30 years of experience working in clay, prioritizing sculptural forms over functional pottery. Darren's deepest passion lies in exploring the unpredictable nature of Raku and alternative firing techniques, where fire, atmosphere, and chance are an integral part of the creative process. His work combines traditional ceramic knowledge with experimentation, color, texture, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.
As a longtime ceramic educator, Darren shares his experience and enthusiasm for clay with students and fellow artists. Teaching classes and workshops across all skill levels is one of the primary ways he keeps his passion for clay ignited.
