Registration required on library website. Author Elliot Haspel explores the history, realities, and future of childcare in America. Drawing from his most recent book, Raising a Nation: 10 Reasons Every American Has a Stake in Child Care For All, this event will examine why childcare matters not only to families with young children, but also to employers, schools, local economies, and the overall health of communities. The evening also highlights current grassroots and policy efforts taking shape locally and across Wisconsin, followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A. Books will be available for sale. The event is co-sponsored by the Chippewa Valley Book Festival.
Raising a Nation is the library's 2026-2027 One Book, One Community book selection. One Book, One Community is a community-wide reading initiative aimed at encouraging residents of the Chippewa Valley to turn their attention to a single book on a social justice topic in order to understand how the issue affects our community, and more importantly, to start conversations about how community members can take positive steps toward change.
Elliot Haspel is a nationally-recognized family policy expert and commentator, with a specialty in child care issues. He is the author of Crawling Behind: America’s Childcare Crisis and How to Fix It and Raising a Nation: 10 Reasons Every American Has a Stake in Child Care For All, in addition to many policy reports, and the Substack The Family Frontier. He has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, appeared on television as an analyst, and his writings have appeared in a wide variety of top publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic. He is regularly sought out by journalists, and has been quoted in such mediums as NPR, The Guardian, and TIME Magazine. He lives in Denver with his spouse and two children.
