We’re taking field science onto the water!
Join DC Bird Alliance and M-NCPPC Parks & Recreation at Patuxent River Park’s Jug Bay Natural Area for a very special morning exploring rail banding and migration research by boat.
Rails are among our wetlands’ most secretive birds. They spend much of their time tucked into dense marsh vegetation, where they can be surprisingly difficult to see even when they’re nearby.
For this program, we’ll head out by boat into the Jug Bay wetlands with park staff for an up-close look at how researchers study these elusive marsh birds.
Rail traps will be opened and, if birds have been captured, we’ll have an opportunity to observe the banding process and learn how researchers safely handle, measure, band, and release birds. We’ll also learn what information is collected and how banding helps scientists better understand migration and bird populations.
Sora may be among the rails we encounter, but other rail species are possible, too. Because we’re working with wild birds, captures and particular species can never be guaranteed. That’s field science!
🚤 About the Boat
This program takes place aboard a boat, so participants should be comfortable boarding, disembarking, and spending an extended period on the water.
Please dress for conditions on the river. Temperatures, wind, and sun exposure can feel different on the water than they do on land.

🐢 Pace: Relaxed, educational program primarily conducted aboard a boat
📏 Distance: Minimal walking is anticipated, but participants must travel between the Visitor Center/launch area and boat
🚤 Boarding: Participants will need to board and disembark the vessel. Please contact DC Bird Alliance before registering if you use a mobility device or require assistance boarding so we can confirm the boat's specific accessibility accommodations with park staff.
🪑 Seating: Seating will be available aboard the boat
🌊 Conditions: Participants should expect normal boat movement and changing outdoor conditions, including wind, sun, and cooler temperatures on the water
🚻 Restrooms: Restroom facilities are available at the park. Participants will check in at the Visitor Center upon arrival.
