Join us at the Mesa Cemetery for a very special ceremony in remembrance of the 23 courageous RAF cadets who lost their lives during training at Falcon Field. From 1941 to 1945, Falcon Field Airport in Mesa, Arizona, served as the No. 4 British Flying Training School, where over 2,300 British Royal Air Force (RAF) cadets were trained alongside American pilots so that training could move away from the dangers and poor weather in the UK. During that time, 23 British cadets, one American cadet, and four instructors lost their lives in training accidents and are buried together in Mesa City Cemetery, with their burial plot maintained jointly by the British government and the City of Mesa.
A memorial plaque made from salvaged wood from a wartime hangar is located in the airport’s terminal, and every second Sunday in November the RAF Cadet Memorial ceremony is held at the cemetery, featuring wreaths, a fly-over, rifle salutes, a bagpipe band, and participation by RAF veterans, British officials, and local organizations, all in honor of the cadets and instructors who trained there and the enduring link to the community’s aviation heritage.
