James Jared

Heels [Advanced] (5-Wk)

Wednesdays, 9pm-10:30pm

Dates: 4/30, 5/7, 5/10, 5/14, 5/28

James began his dance journey as an 8-year-old in Southern California, where he trained in a variety of styles including jazz, hip-hop, ballet, and contemporary. He earned a minor degree in Modern Dance and Choreography from Princeton University in 2019, where he also danced and choreographed for diSiac Dance Company. It was during this time that James also began his heels training. Since college, James has continued his dance education in Boston and San Francisco, and more recently has taught heels classes at various studios in the Bay, including City Dance, ODC, and Rae. James has been honored to perform choreography by Chris Martin, Ohad Naharin, Crystal Pite, Robert Battle, and others.

In his heels choreography, James blends the movement vocabularies of all styles he’s trained in, with a primary focus on contemporary and jazz. Like most other heels classes, his choreography is rooted in the sensuality of the feminine form. However, James also explores how this feminine aesthetic can be in dialogue with a masculine presentation and how a more masculine aesthetic can also fuel a feminine performance. In other words, he asks the question, “How can traditionally female movement qualities demonstrate maleness, and how can traditionally male qualities emphasize womanhood?” Of course, his choreography is still full of the sexy, fun, and flirty style that you can expect from any heels class.

Ig: jams_jard/

Erica Knox

Contemporary [Intermediate] (8-Wk)

Sundays, 3:00pm-4:30pm

Dates: 4/6, 4/13, 4/20, 4/27, 5/4, 5/11, 5/18, 5/25

Erica Knox (she/her) is a dancer and educator. She graduated from Fordham University, studying History and IPE on a full academic scholarship, and recently completed Alonzo King LINES Ballet’s Training Program. Some highlights of her teaching experience include tutoring college students academically, and giving ballet classes for a college ballet company. The past two summers she has been a teacher assistant for the LINES Ballet summer intensives. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes health of the body, imaginative metaphor and belief in new possibilities.

Intensive Description: Contemporary [Intermediate]:

We will work together to create a piece that showcases an organic, fluid, expressive movement quality. I will create 2 longer phrases, one that initiates from the heart space and uses the spine/ribcage especially to express. The second will contrast and be more grounded, rooted and strong. In addition the dancers will create their own personal gesture phrases that I will help them build off of a journaling prompt. I am planning on using instrumental music (no words), and incorporating elements like canons to add musical interest. In terms of structure I would like to begin with a gentle floor warmup, then connect to the big ideas of the piece, then learn/review phrases, then end with personal creative work time.

That's right! Training season is here!

This series offers students the opportunity to refine their skills in various dance styles while fostering a sense of community among peers who share the same passion for delivering outstanding performances. Each year, we host dance showcases that highlight students eager to elevate their dance journey and perform on the big stage. This workshop allows participants to perfect their choreography and improve their overall performance quality. Last season's show featured over 130+ performers with over 350+ attendees present for our Winter Show. We look forward to the growth as we head into our Spring Intensive!

This workshop series includes 8-weeks and 5 week set of rehearsals. Single ticket drop-ins are allowed for the first two classes for students to test out the class. Classes are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot in advance. Join one of our artists in a training series for the chance to perform for our 6th showcase on June 1st and fourth time performing at Please note, performing at the showcase is not required, as we respect the individual growth process of every dancer. Performing on stage is encouraged, but sometimes dancers need more room to prepare for the big stage. For those that are unable to attend the showcase, or do not want to perform live, you are still able to sign up for the series. Now, let's begin!

Florence Wang

Contemporary [Int/Adv] (5-Wk)

Sundays, 4:30pm-6:00pm

Dates: 4/19, 4/27, 5/4, 5/11, 5/18

Florence Wang (she/her) was raised in Columbia, SC, and has been dancing for the past 19 years. Although her primary focus is contemporary and contemporary improvisation, she has trained in a myriad of styles and dance techniques. She started her training in classical ballet at the age of 3 at the UofSC Ballet Conservatory, and then later auditioned and joined the Columbia City Jazz Conservatory (CCJC) company where she trained in ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, and jazz, and competed in prestigious conventions–including but not limited to–Nuvo, Jump, 24/7, and Adrenaline. She went on to attend Duke University where she joined Defining Movement Dance group (Duke’s premier multicultural dance group) and Devils en Pointe (Duke’s premier ballet company). In Spring 2020, she helped co-found Duke’s first and only contemporary and improvisation dance group, Embodiment Contemporary Dance. While serving as president and co-founder, she helped choreograph, lead weekly classes, and teach collaborative workshops for four years. She was also an active member in the Duke Dance department and had her works presented in multiple university dance shows and graduated with a minor in dance. She is super excited to share her love for dance and explore contemporary dance movement in her class!
