In 1926, radium was a miracle cure. Madame Curie was an international celebrity. Luminous watches were the height of modern innovation. Then the young women who painted them began to die.
They were told the glowing paint was safe. They were told there was nothing to fear. And when the evidence began to tell a very different story, one of America's most powerful corporations had every reason to make sure their voices were never heard.
Inspired by the extraordinary and heartbreaking true events, D.W. Gregory’s Radium Girls follows dial painter Grace Fryer (Addison Raftery and Lucienne Roberts) as she takes on the U.S. Radium Corporation and begins a David-and-Goliath fight for justice. Standing in her way is her former employer, Arthur Roeder (Ben Loutitt) - a man who believes passionately in the promise of radium and cannot accept that the scientific breakthrough he championed may be destroying the lives of the women who worked for him.
But taking on a corporation means taking on far more than a courtroom. As reputations, livelihoods and relationships are threatened, Grace must decide just how much she is prepared to risk to make the truth impossible to ignore.
One hundred years after the events of 1926, their fight returns to the stage.

Directed by award-winning director and Artistic Director of acclaimed Newcastle theatre company Knock and Run Theatre Company, James Chapman, Radium Girls comes to the Civic Playhouse for three days only this November.
