About this Event
Area of Interest: RFRSO
Course Summary
The aim of this course is to provide those who are designated Radio Frequency Radiation Safety Officers (RFRSO) with an understanding of the principles and practice of radio frequency radiation safety and radio frequency radiation safety measurement. The references for the course are ARPANSA Radiation Protection Series Publication S-1 (Rev. 1) and Australian Standard AS 2772.2:2016.
*Please note the structure of this course will run as follows:
Course duration: 2 1/2 days
Mon 2 Nov: Delivered online via Zoom
Tues 10 - Wed 11: Delivered face-to-face in Canberra (Practical component)
Course Content
- Introduction to Radio Frequency (RF) radiation
- Introduction to the health effects of RF and RF radiation safety
- Introduction to the Australian RF Exposure Standard
- RF calculations and the application of the exposure standard to continuous wave and pulsed RF sources
- RF radiation test and measurement and the computation and measurement standard
- RF radiation survey exercises
- Review and assessment
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of RF radiation health effects, and RF radiation safety practices and requirements, as specified in the Australian Standard
- Show competency with calculations involving RF quantities associated with RF sources and the application of these calculations to RF surveys
- Measure RF radiation quantities
- Apply measured RF quantities to establish hazard distances and the associated uncertainty bounds.
Who should attend
- Ideal for: members of the Australian Defence Force, or other organisations, who are designated Radio Frequency Radiation Safety Officers (RFRSO).
- Prerequisite: competency with basic mathematical calculations.
Instructors
Phillip Knipe
Phillip Knipe holds a BSc (1990), MPhil (2002) and PhD (2013) in physics from Murdoch University, Australia. Since 1996, he has worked as a consultant physicist specialising in ionising and non-ionising radiation protection in Australia and internationally.
In 2002, he founded Total Radiation Solutions, which holds ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17020 accreditations. He has published in peer-reviewed journals on electromagnetic field measurement.
Phillip is a member of Standards Australia Committee TE007 (EMF safety) and has contributed to the IEC standard for radio wave measurement and modelling (62232) since 2007. He is also an inaugural member of the IRPA Non-Ionizing Radiation Task Group and an affiliate researcher at ACEBR.
