By mid-afternoon on Halloween, Bynum’s already buzzing. Neighbors carry their jack-o’-lanterns to the old Bynum Bridge; closed to cars, wide open to everyone. One by one, candles flicker to life, and the bridge begins to glow with hundreds of orange faces—some grinning, some spooky, some just plain silly. The reflections shimmer on the Haw River below, ripples of firelight dancing downstream while the night hums with laughter, music, and crickets.
