We cordially invite students and tutors of the Academia cum laude individual study program and the entire community of Vytautas Magnus University to a public lecture by Professor Małgorzata Litwinowicz-Droździel from the University of Warsaw, titled "Ethnographic, literary, botanical: Eliza Orzeszkowa's passions and the cultural biography of the Nemunas river".The lecture will take place on Tuesday, October 13, at 4:00 PM at the Valdas Adamkus Presidential Library (S. Daukanto st. 25, Kaunas).
Professor Litwinowicz-Droździel is a historian of 19th-century Polish culture, a Lithuanian studies scholar, and a cultural animator. Her work focuses on Polish modernity, particularly issues related to media transformations and innovation. She leads the Interdepartmental 19th-Century Culture Research Team.
The lecture and discussion will address the interests of Eliza Orzeszkowa—a late 19th-century writer from the Grodno region—and the cultural significance of the Nemunas River. Eliza Orzeszkowa was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature, and her most famous novel is "Nad Niemnem" (Lithuanian: "Prie Nemuno", published in 1888, with the latest Lithuanian edition released in 2025).
