The VMU Centre for Social Anthropology (Faculty of Social Sciences), the V. Kavolis Transdisciplinary Research Institute and Choreomundus (Faculty of Humanities) invite you to a public lecture „Why do spirits possess some of us, and leave others alone? Why do some of us see visions, while others never will? Moving Beyond the Doors of Perception: How Cultures Inspire and Explain Extraordinary Experiences" by Prof. John R Baker (Moorpark College, USA; President of the Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness). The event will take place on 30 October 2026 at 17:00 in Room 103 at 23 V. Putvinskio Street, Kaunas. The lecture will be conducted in English.
Anthropologists have long explored how cultures shape, interpret, and regulate altered states of consciousness, from visions and trance to possession, raising questions about how biology, psychology, and cultural explanations interact. Using the work of Carlos Castaneda, this lecture examines why cultures treat extraordinary experiences differently and what the study of consciousness can reveal about perception, reality, and our shared humanity.
