WHAT: Protest to end Airbnb's ravaging of Sydney's housing landscapeWHEN: Monday November 16, 4.30pm before City of Sydney Council meeting
WHERE: Sydney Town Hall, then we go into Council.
WHY: There are over 20,000 dwellings lost to Airbnb and short term rentals across Gadigal Country/ Sydney. Housing groups are demanding an end to the displacement of locals, the destruction of neighbourhoods for profiteering, the endless vacant dwellings in a housing crisis.
HOW: We are demanding City of Sydney implement the New York model to stop airbnb and short term rentals. It's 30 days minimum, host and guests together in the home and maximum two guests.
Homes should be for people, not Airbnb profit.
The City of Sydney has the highest number of homeless rough sleepers of any local government area in NSW, with 296 people sleeping rough. Yet the City of Sydney is one of the wealthiest Councils in the country.
There are 554 Airbnb listings in Surry Hills alone, 430 in Darlinghurst, 241 in Dawes/Millers Point, 225 in Pyrmont, 210 in Potts Point, 144 in Redfern, 121 in Chippendale, 115 in Woolloomooloo and 63 in Elizabeth Bay.
The City of Sydney must do more than tinker at the edges of short-term rentals.
Join our action, then come into the Council meeting to see the airbnb motion placed in the Council meeting.
Action for Public Housing is asking all councillors to pass this motion at the City of Sydney Council meeting:
