About this Event
This course is aimed at experienced electricians or technicians working with temporary power or working in theatre, events, broadcasting, film.
Please read the following carefully. You will be expected to understand the technical content and by booking a place on this course, you agree that you meet the following requirements:
- You have sufficient knowledge of electrical theory and practice to complete this course (eg able to use Ohms law, do power calculations, power factor etc.). This course does not teach these basics.
- You have experience of working with temporary power systems. The content uses examples from the events industry, but experience of temporary power gained in other sectors (e.g. construction) will be beneficial.
- You understand that this is a pass/fail course. We operate a discretionary re-sit policy depending on your overall results.
- If you are a trainee, you confirm that you have sufficient electrical knowledge to at least foundation level and sufficient industry experience
The course consists of:
8 x written theory assessments after each module (open book)
1 x practical assessment (closed book)
The assessments consist of a mix of short written questions/answers and multiple-choice questions. For the practical the candidate has to demonstrate to the assessor their skills of observation of electrical inspection and also demonstrate testing of electrical systems using equipment supplied.
The course covers the following areas:
- The requirements and practical application of legislation and relevant standards
- The role earth plays in electrical safety, common earthing arrangements, protective bonding requirements and generator earthing.
- The application of different electrical protection methods, including the selection of appropriate devices and their correct use.
- Testing and inspection of equipment and temporary systems, including the reporting requirements of BS 7909. This also includes a practical element using test equipment supplied by the trainer.
- Managing temporary electrical systems in accordance with BS 7909 including practical steps to assessing electrical risks, especially in special locations (eg wet locations or those with greater risk of mechanical damage).
- Generator operation and housekeeping and supply arrangements in mobile and transportable units.
Background
The course was written and developed by the UK expert on temporary power, James Eade with industry input and backing.
The course was updated in April 2026 and covers the latest edition of BS 7909 issued in January 2023. It is fully up to date with the latest amendment of the Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018+A4:2026) and BS 7430:2026 (code of Practice for Earthing). It also incorporates James’ guidance on generators published by the IET. Other guidance referenced in the course includes the IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment, 5th Edition (also written by James Eade) and industry guidance from PLASA as well as the ABTT’s Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment.
Course location
Courses are delivered at Prospect offices by James or his colleagues who all have extensive experience of working in the industry.
This is a pass or fail course. All modules must be passed to achieve the award. Re-takes are offered twice a year for a discounted fee. This is dependent on your overall score and practical demonstration.

Duration: 3 days: 9.00 am - 5.00 pm each day.
Tea, coffee, water and biscuits will be provided. There is also a fridge and microwave you can use. There are plenty of cafes and sandwich places nearby to purchase food.
Please note that the training venue does not offer car parking.
Cancellation Policy: We appreciate that when circumstances change you may no longer be able to attend a training course on the date you have booked and paid for.
Whilst we will always try our best to accommodate any alterations to your plans, Bectu has a standard cancellation policy which is as follows:
If you notify us (phone/email) at least 7 full working days before the scheduled course date you will not be charged and will be refunded any course fees you have paid.
For any cancellation you make that is less than 7 full working days before the course date, you will be charged 50% of the total course fee with 50% refunded.
If you do not attend the course and/or fail to notify us in advance you will be charged the full course fee.
We are unable to reimburse any non-transferable travel or accommodation expenses that may arise from a course being re-scheduled or cancelled.
Bectu reserves the right to cancel courses without liability. However, where possible, delegates will be offered an alternative date or a full refund.
