What do birders really want for Christmas? More birds, of course!Join Rich Armstrong for a humorous look at the Christmas Bird Count (CBC)—what it is, how it works, and why birders willingly get up before dawn in the middle of winter to count birds.
Organized by the National Audubon Society, the Christmas Bird Count is an annual early-winter bird census and the world’s longest-running community science survey. Across the Western Hemisphere, thousands of volunteers head into the field between December 14 and January 4 to count every bird they can find. Feeder watchers also join the fun, counting birds from the comfort of home.
Come find out what happens when birders, binoculars, early mornings, and a whole lot of birds come together for one of the biggest birding traditions of the year!
Rich has participated in more than 100 CBCs in Texas, Oregon, and Arizona. He has coordinated the Sedona CBC for the past 15 years and has been a section leader for the Jerome and Camp Verde CBCs every year.
