𝐃𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐮 𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐚̨: There are many reasons today for heritage loss: geopolitical upheavals and armed conflicts, regime changes and challenged democracies, as well as ecological crises and rapid technological developments – these are just a few reasons for heritage to be under threat. The brutal destruction or conscious dismantling of heritage is one dynamic of such transformations. Another is the deliberate (and sometimes liberating) letting go of heritage, the disposal, renouncing, undoing or revising of what formerly had been considered worthwhile to preserve for the future. How heritage loss in its different guises may be adequately addressed is an open question. In this paper, I present a number of artistic responses to heritage loss that were developed at the Centre for Advanced Study inherit. heritage in transformation, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. My analysis of these artistic approaches shows the potential of art’s involvement in exploring new ways of heritage research and practice.
𝐃𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐮 𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬̌𝐞̇𝐣𝐚̨: Eva Ehninger is Professor of Modern Art History at the Institute of Art and Visual History and co-director of the Centre for Advanced Study 𝑖𝑛ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑡. ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She is interested in the transfer of heritage into, and by means of, different media, its dissemination in varied historical and cultural contexts, and in changes of meaning and value that are based on these transformations. The implications and potentials of digitization are a significant consideration. Her current research interests also include conceptions of art and aesthetic education, with a geographical focus on India, as well as alternative modes of time and history in colonial, postcolonial, transnational and transcultural contexts.
