This is a reminder that the Planning Commission’s proposed code changes will be voted on by the Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday, November 17, at 1:30 p.m. The public hearing will be held at the Old Courthouse at 544 Rood Ave, Grand Junction, CO 81501 Please consider attending and speaking if you are able. Your voice makes a difference.
Many of the proposed changes are the direct result of citizens speaking up about the personal impact of inadequately regulated industrial and commercial development. Residents have brought attention to the loss of quality of life (noise, dust, light pollution, industrialization and commercialization in residential/agricultural areas) and declining property values. There have also been issues of illegal construction and trespass, environmental degradation and compromised fire safety. Other concerns brought up and addressed in the new draft are lack of opportunity for public input by affected property owners and the unfair financial burden placed on taxpayers when the costs of cleanup and remediation are left to the public rather than the corporations that profit from these developments. Private citizens have also had to carry the financial burden of expensive lawsuits to protect their property rights. The county doesn't enforce its own rules.
It is important for the County Commissioners to hear our personal experiences and see how deficiencies in the current code have affected our lives, properties, and communities. Industries and developers have the money and staff to reach out to the County Commissioners and involve their special interest groups in the code writing process. They make the case that no oversight or community protections are necessary. By sharing our personal experiences we demonstrate to the County Commissioners why stronger protections and better oversight are necessary.
The proposed code changes address these problems and help protect our communities moving forward. Please make your voice heard.
