About this Event
Private Yoga Therapy in Coquitlam
Please note: This is a private, one-to-one yoga therapy offering—not a group class or public event.
Because many people have never encountered yoga therapy, I am sharing this offering on Eventbrite to bring greater awareness to this personalized and supportive healing modality.
Have you ever wondered how the practices of yoga could support your health, healing process, self-awareness, or spiritual development?
Yoga therapy uses the tools and principles of yoga in a way that is customized for your body, needs, circumstances, and personal goals. Rather than asking you to fit into a predetermined yoga sequence, we begin with you.
No previous yoga experience or flexibility is required.
What Is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy is the individualized application of yoga practices in support of a person’s health and well-being.
It can feel somewhat like a therapy session because we begin with a meaningful conversation about what you are experiencing and what you would like support with. However, yoga therapy is not psychotherapy, physiotherapy, or medical treatment. It is a complementary practice using yoga-based tools within the scope of a Certified Yoga Therapist.
Depending on what feels most appropriate and supportive for you, your practice may include:
- Restorative yoga and supported rest
- Gentle, accessible movement
- Personalized movement adaptations
- Breath practices
- Meditation
- Mudras
- Guided relaxation
- Somatic awareness and embodiment
- Nervous system regulation
- Reflection and self-inquiry practices
- Practices for cultivating awareness and consciousness
- Simple yoga-based tools to use in daily life
Some sessions may include very little physical movement. Yoga therapy is not about how much you can do or how well you can perform a pose. It is about discovering which combination of practices best supports you.
Supporting the Conditions for Rest and Restoration
When the body has been living with ongoing stress, pain, vigilance, or overwhelm, it can become difficult to access genuine rest.
Many yoga therapy practices are intended to support a gradual shift toward greater parasympathetic—or “rest-and-digest”—activity. This does not mean that healing occurs only in one nervous system state or that yoga therapy can guarantee healing. Rather, creating more opportunities for safety, rest, and regulation may support the body’s natural restorative processes.
Through supported rest, breath, awareness, meditation, and gentle movement, we explore what helps your system settle without forcing relaxation. The process is gradual, responsive, and shaped around how your individual body and nervous system respond.
Yoga Therapy Is Goal-Based
Yoga therapy is a collaborative and goal-based process.
You may already know what you would like to work toward, or you may simply sense that something in your body or life needs attention. During our initial session, we explore what is bringing you to yoga therapy and identify an appropriate focus together.
Your goal might relate to:
- Finding greater rest and nervous system regulation
- Supporting your well-being while living with pain, fatigue, digestive concerns, or other symptoms
- Reconnecting with your body following an injury, surgery, or health transition
- Supporting your well-being during pregnancy or the postnatal period
- Moving through grief, loss, or a significant life transition
- Adapting movement following limb loss or changes in mobility
- Developing a gentler and more accessible relationship with yoga
- Building self-awareness and getting to know yourself more deeply
- Deepening an existing meditation or contemplative practice
- Exploring your relationship with yourself and others
- Cultivating greater awareness, presence, and spiritual connection
- Creating a sustainable personal practice that supports your daily life
The purpose is not to diagnose or cure a condition or promise the elimination of symptoms. Instead, we use yoga-based practices to support your well-being, strengthen self-awareness, and help you move toward a meaningful and realistic goal.
How the Yoga Therapy Cycle Works
We typically begin with one 90-minute initial session. This gives us time to get to know one another, explore what you are experiencing, and collaboratively identify the focus of our work.
If continuing feels appropriate, we then work together through a six-session yoga therapy cycle centred around your identified goal.
Across these sessions, we may:
- Explore which practices are most supportive for you
- Notice how your body and nervous system respond
- Adapt the practice as your needs evolve
- Develop tools that can be used in daily life
- Deepen meditation, reflection, or self-inquiry
- Reflect on changes, challenges, and progress
- Create a personalized practice that feels realistic and sustainable
The process is collaborative rather than prescriptive. Your feedback, boundaries, and lived experience help guide every session. Although six sessions provide a meaningful structure for the work, outcomes cannot be guaranteed, and each person’s process will unfold differently.
Who Have I Supported?
My yoga therapy experience has included working with people navigating different life stages, physical realities, health concerns, and personal transitions, including:
- Prenatal and postnatal mothers
- People living with injuries, pain, or reduced mobility
- People with limb loss requiring highly individualized adaptations
- People experiencing digestive concerns
- People moving through grief and loss
- People experiencing stress, fatigue, or nervous system overwhelm
- People seeking a gentler and more accessible relationship with yoga
- People wishing to deepen their meditation, self-awareness, or spiritual practice
Every person’s experience is different. Your practice will be developed in response to you rather than based solely on a diagnosis, condition, or category.
A Trauma-Sensitive and Collaborative Approach
My approach is invitational, trauma-sensitive, and grounded in personal choice.
You will not be pressured to move through discomfort, disclose anything you do not wish to share, or perform a practice in one particular way. Every practice can be adapted, paused, or changed.
We work collaboratively, with respect for your boundaries, autonomy, culture, beliefs, and lived experience.
