About this Event

John Hitchcock is a contemporary artist, musician, and the Truman Lowe Professor of Art and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Raised in Medicine Park, Oklahoma, on Comanche Tribal lands near Fort Sill, he is an enrolled member of the Kiowa Tribe and has Comanche and Northern European ancestry. Hitchcock creates multimedia works that combine printmaking, neon, textiles, sound, and video. His art reclaims narratives of survival, exploring community, land, and culture. His intense colors and abstract designs reference his Comanche grandmother’s beadwork and intercultural themes. He holds a BFA from Cameron University and an MFA from Texas Tech University. His honors include a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation grant and the Jerome Foundation Grant. Hitchcock's work has been exhibited globally, including at the National Gallery of Art, the Portland Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, and the Venice Biennale.
