Printing with Trash: Sustainable Printmaking Techniques

This is an introductory level printmaking course and is most recommended for learners 16 and older.

A printing matrix can be made from most materials. By using collographs, drypoint etchings, and monotypes we can achieve incredible imagery using materials that can be found around the house. Over the course of this class students will be prompted to challenge themselves using unconventional materials to create printing plates. These materials include cardboard, aluminum cans, lace and other textured materials. The objective will be to learn to make images using materials that can be found around the house and then printed using the press in the studio. Students will learn how to print these matrices using a press first and then through hand printing techniques so that these processes can be carried on at home!

The materials fee for this class is $25. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts Venmo.

• Students will learn how to operate a press safely and create prints that can be made into editions. Students will also be introduced to using a press to make images.
• Students will learn about collographs, aluminum plate drypoint etching, and monotype techniques.
• Students will have editions of prints that were made using recyclable materials. Students will also have baseline knowledge of the press to be able to use under supervision during studio access times.
• Students would walk away from the class with the ability to make prints with these techniques on their own (if they would like to continue to use A2's print equipment) while also leaving with greater understanding of art making and talking about art as a whole.

Freddy Thomas is a queer, Boston based, interdisciplinary artist and designer working in printmaking, fibers, and installation. They have been making printed work for 7 years and self identify as a huge "print nerd." They love the process based nature of printmaking and are excited to share it with everyone!

• Access to A2's Screenprinting shop and tools for the duration of the session.

Attire: Attendants should wear closed-toed, slip-resistant shoes (steel-toe work boots are ideal), long pants, and no loose-fitting clothing that could possibly get caught in machinery. Make sure to wear only natural fibers (i.e., cotton, wool, linen, etc) and bring reading glasses if needed for detailed work.
